Expectations

There’s something about expectations. For some reason, they’re hardwired into our brains. I’d imagine it’s because we seek comfort and familiarity. These things feel safe. They help us lead a predictable life.

Unfortunately, they also open us up to hurt. When we begin to expect things, we can be let down. We can be hurt.

I think a better idea than expecting something of someone is seeing them where they are right now. With this, I can still maintain an optimistic outlook and have hope, but I’ll separate that from what is happening in reality.

Hope is important because it inspires forward progress while seeing people where they are helps us to adapt quickly and respond to what’s truly going on.

We’re still going to be hurt, but we’ll be better prepared to deal with it.
